I've often read that Gypsy is considered to be the quintessential American musical. Now I'll admit, it has great tunes. But the greatest American musical? Too dark. I've thought about this. I started to choose The Wizard of Oz because of the nostalgic remembrances of being a kid and being allowed to eat supper in the living room on tv trays. But I think The Sound of Music is the greatest musical. It has everything: wonderful singalongable tunes, war, Catholicism, class struggle, nationalism, conflict, sex, suspense, intrigue, spies, romance, beautiful scenery, and a fundamental decency that assures us that good people win. Hell it‘s got everything but a good hairstyle for the heroine. I feel it’s the perfect musical.
