Yours For A Song ...

Okay here's my question: why is it permissible to change the original melody of a song and call it an "arrangement?" Yet if I take the characters (notes,) the dialogue (lyrics,) and the plot (arrangement) of a story and rewrite it - it's called "plagiarism?"

Case in point: Over The Rainbow (music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg.)

And yes, I love Eva Cassidy's voice ... but that's not my point. Let's see the larger picture here.

My bottom line: write your own Goddamned song.
